Get the size of hav-a-hart live trap that will hold a gopher. It has two open ends and a bait tray that is the trigger. When the gopher sees the food in something which is open on both ends it will enter and touch the bait, That will trigger the dropping of the doors on both ends and you caught your gopher,
Pick up the trap by its top handle and drive to a suitable area more than three miles from your home and tip the trap over so the doors unlatch. Your gopher is still alive but is not heading back to your hosue.
