although distasteful poisening or traps are the ultimate answer I do know that a neighbor was successful in chasing them away temporarily when he ran a vibratory plate compactor over his yard several times a week the gophers all left but returned eventually good luck

The only problem with what he wants to do, is that basically he's going to give his problem to someone else. If he chases them away, they have to go somewhere. So someone else is going to have to do something about it. And if they feel the same and just relocate them, they'll come right back to your friend's house.
He has to decide whether he wants to get rid of the gophers or not. And if he wants to get rid of them, that means getting rid of them. Either killing them by poison or trapping them.
Either that or he could just leave travel brochures lying around on the lawn.....
