I have used highway flares, the type you keep in your car for emergencies. I put two or three down every hole I could find and closed the hole over with loose dirt. After a bit check to see if smoke is filtering up through other holes and plug them. I used about 20 flares and never had gopher problems again.

1. MacAbee gopher traps.
Macabee Gopher Trap Co.
110 Loma Alta Avenue
Los Gatos, CA 95030
408-354-4158
Available in hardware and feed stores. See OSH link below.

2. Drop pieces of dry ice down their holes. CO2 is a heavier-than-air gas so it will flow through the network of holes, displacing the lighter oxygen, and suffocating the animals. (Not for the faint of heart.) Because CO2 is odorless, they won't smell it like the smoke you had used. Check your Yellow Pages for Ice and Supplies for Dry Ice.

I don't think you have gophers. I think they're moles and you can't get rid of them until you get rid of their food, which is grubs. Go to your local garden center and they will help.

I use DCon rat poison on them. I also use that Dcon rat poison to rid of ground squirrels that are another problem around here. They readily eat the stuff and vanish into permanent sleep in those neat houses below never to be seen again.

We have moles, but they are equally frustrating. My neighbor tried shooting them, but it didn't work and almost got her arrested.

We trap the moles, and since they are 'mole and gopher' traps, I'd try that. For all you PETA folk, move on now before I horrify you. There is no catch and release program for gophers or moles, so you will need to kill them. I don't buy into the nonsense of spraying the lawn with castor oil or wind driven vibrating machines that scare the buggers away. Death is the only option.

The traps I use are shaped like two horseshoes with a spring and bar between them. We get them at the hardware store, Home Depot had them last time I wanted a couple more.

To set them, find the a busy run underground (shouldn't be a problem for you). Dig out a hole wide enough for the trap. Set the trap in the hole so it lines up with the run so they will run between the jaws of death. I partially plug up both ends of the run in the delusion that they will be pushing through the dirt and not notice the death trap that awaits them. Also put a little clod of dirt under the trigger so the trip lever is resting on the clod. It springs better that way. Hee hee

Set it in there, you may trip it a couple times getting it set up. Remember the easier trips, the faster they will DIE DIE DIE. oh, sorry, die.

Place a bucket over the hole, put a rock on the bucket to keep the dog out of it. Check daily. When you pull out a dead gopher, howl wildly and giggle in glee. We have contemplated hanging their heads or pelts on the garage wall, but have settled for the official mole killing whoop and dance instead. Best luck to you, and may they all die Die DIE DIE DIE DIE.

Buy gopher traps, they work easy and you don't have to touch the gopher and risk getting bit. They are easy to use.You should be able to get them at any local hardware store.
