How do I safely make gophers leave my yard?

March 27th, 2009
Wanda M asked:

I don’t want to kill them or trap them. Also, I have a Jack Russel Terrier so my solution will have to be safe for him in the yard.

Could “potato bugs” or gophers be killing my oak tree?

March 26th, 2009
Jackie A asked:

We are finding a lot of them (potato bugs) in the ground. We are in San Diego & our particular area has very sandy soil. We have seen them before, but many more this year & the tree looks bad. We’ve always had gophers, so I thought I would add that in there too.
Does anyone know what the potato bugs do like &/or why we might have more? Our climate has been so weird (cold!) this year, I assume it’s related but I don’t really know.

Does chewing gum kill mice? The ones invading our house seem to like it?

I have heard that putting Juicy Fruit gum in gopher holes will kill them because they eat it and can’t digest it. I was wondering if the messy mice who turned our gum drawer into a pile of aluminum foil and paper shreds were doomed.

Ground Squirrels – how do I kill them?

March 24th, 2009
Amber asked:

So, we are keeping poultry in the coops at the 4H farm. The kids pay for the feed for the animals. The problem is that it is costing an arm and a leg to feed the few chickens and ducks in there because the ground squirrels keep getting in. They eat more food than the hens do. I’ve been working on fixing the coop but can see I may not be able to keep them out as it is a very large coop and (well, no need for all the details. Sufficeth to say, I see no solution but to kill the little buggers.

Can’t shoot them, can’t sick a terrier on them, not sure if poisons are allowed on the farm. Any suggestions? I REALLY need help!

One more question. Does Juicy Fruit gum really kill gophers and prarie dogs? And would that work with ground squirrels?
La Vie Boheme- If you eat food at all – animal or vegetable, set out ant or coachroach bates, or decorate your home with flowers, killing is part of your philosophy.

I need help to control moles in my yard?

March 18th, 2009
Perplexed asked:

I have reoccuring problems with moles in my lawn. I have tried almost every over the counter product, including a trap that didn’t work at all. The most effective solution to date has been a powdered product that you spinkle over the lawn, but it only last about three weeks.
Does anyone have a longer term solution?

Survey: How do I get rid of moles in my yard?

March 14th, 2009
to_the_hurricave asked:

I’ve been going back and forth on how to get rid of the moles currently destroying my yard. Some people say that if you kill the food source with a product like Scotts Grubex, the moles will leave your yard and go elsewhere. Other people say that products like Grubex will not work and you need to set traps and all that jazz. Yet more people say that you need two people; one person with a water hose stuck in their mole run and the other person with a shot gun. My favorite option! :)

What do you think?

What is an effective method to get rid of rats and mice?

March 6th, 2009
Adel asked:

How do you go about exterminating rodents from your attic? Do you suggest large or small-sized mousetraps, and where should I place them. Also, we’ve tried using rat poison to no avail. But let’s say we manage to kill some of them off with the mousetraps, will that deter other rats from coming? I would like a way to get rid of the rats for good.
