Have you ever had a woodpecker peck on a metal part of your home and did it do any damage?

This morning, I woke up to jackhammering which was occurring right above my bedroom on one of those metal vent pipes that extend from the roof.

Usually this woodpecker pokes holes in my wood siding.

So, I am wondering if I am lucky that he has elected to attack metal or will I end up having to pay for a costly repair?

I can’t imagine he’ll continue at it to do any damage. He just might’ve been confused (assuming painted metal) and just thought he was going for wood.

woodpeckers peck anything…scare him/her off with a fake owl…or rubber snake…

they like to peck brick too…

I think all that head banging makes them stupid.

Two years in a row I had a woodpecker peck on a heavy metal structure….no damage, but rather strange as to why it would choose metal instead of wood! You may want to try reflecting strips, aluminum pie pans, etc. to hang in hopes to annoy it away! Personally, I think they’re brain dead!

On thin sheet metal you’ll get pock marks. On a copper vent pipe? I doubt that one woodpecker will live long enough to cause any real damage. (And the repair isn’t that costly unless he starts attacking it below the roof line.)

We lived in a mobile home and they used to come down and wake us up in the morning jack hammering our roof. They never pocked holes in it. Scared you out of your sleep. They are after insects but no damage was done.

They do it to attract a mate and establish territory. For those purposes, metal is a lot more effective.fdd
