Is it true that it is illegal in Indiana, PA for a domestic animal to kill a rabbit?

PurrrDcat asked:

I was told that if my dog, or cat, kills a rabbit, they should be shot – NOT THE RABBIT, MY PET!!!!! We live on 13 acres, I have 1 dog and 1 cat. The cat brings home little presents, like moles, mice, and even a chipmunk and rat! I was told that if she brings home a bunny, or my dog, that they should be shot???? Could someone tell me why on earth someone would say that? It’s legal for people to shoot them! Could someone help me with this? I’m really confussed!!! thanks, tina
In case anyone cares, I heard that there is a disease that rabbits can carry and if a domestic CAT, not dog, gets it, they can die too so I guess that is why you should just shot ur loving cat (how dare they)! I’d be doing everything I could to help save my cat if they got a disease from a rabbit! Thanks

As long as the dog is on your property it can kill any wildlife that is not endangered or protected by the government.

sounds like a load of bull!

you need to call the DNR to get the correct answer.

I know this; when I hunt, the farmer tells us that if we see ferel cats we should kill them since the barn cats stay near the barn.

That is SO Stupid! I’m in Kentucky, on several acres myself, and I’m not shooting my dog or cat if they kill a wild animal. Heck, what would happen if a person hit one wth their car if it ran in front of them, death by lethal injection?LMAO, some “laws” are JOKES, and if my dog or cat killed a rabbig(which they dont) nobody would know the wiser.

“I was told that if she brings home a bunny, or my dog, that they should be shot???? ”

I think the person who was saying this meant that your pet SHOULD not would be shot. As in, that person was expressing disgust at the thought of your pet killing a rabbit. There are some animal lovers out there who are very passionate when it comes to their favorite animal so they would prefer shooting another animal over seeing their favorite one die.

The thing is, it’s perfectly natural for your cat or dog to hunt. Of course, I wouldn’t encourage it but it’s natural and if you let your pets run about the property, it’s only normal that they will bring home presents.

As for diseases, there are some things that can be passed through various species. For example, if a rabbit is infected with ticks, your cat could get them, etc etc. That’s why it would be important for you to have your pets up-to-date with all their shots and do regular anti-parasite treatments.

If your cat or dog doesn’t wear one already, consider adding a bell to their collars so the other animals have a better chance of hearing them approaching. That won’t stop your pet from hunting, but it may reduce how many kills your pet makes.
