My cat left a full size adult squirrel at the front door yesterday. Has anyone seen this happen before?

mazdaseven asked:

I assume she killed it herself as she has left other smaller things like lizards and moles at the same place.

your cat just brought you a present, don’t scold it for that just pet the cat and get rid of it without the cat seeing you do it

It is a cat’s natural instinct to kill animal’s, my cat went through a faze similar to that only with chipmunks. Try to keep your cat indoors more.

supposed to be a gift from your pet. my cats have done same thing…that’s why sometimes pets are better to be around than some people…

yes we have a cat that will catch squirrels and rabbits, and mole and of course birds. it is a good thing he/she is presenting it to you, almost like a gift saying thank you.

My cat used to do this all the time. He brought home squirrels, chipmunks, baby birds, blind moles, rabbits, mice and once a garter snake. He would usually eat the head and bring the rest to me. I think he was sharing his catch to show appreciation for me taking care of him. He also sometimes would bring home things that were still alive and they’d get loose in the house.

Cats Love Their Owners and just like if you love someone they give you a present. A squirrel is a very hard catch so i would assume there was something wrong with it. The cat is just trying to be nice so don’t scold it give it a pat and dispose of the “present” as soon as possible.

You should be sure to praise her for a job well done…Not only did she hunt down something that’s probably almost as big as her, but she gave it to you as a gift!

    What a good kitty!

cats will often present gifts to their owners. This is one way they do it: Kill something and bring it where they know you will travel. You’re lucky she didn’t put it in your shoe or bedroom.

Sure, that isn’t unusual. Out where we live, we don’t really have many squirrels, but our cats bring us jack rabbits as presents. I’m not kidding. One of them actually caught a jack rabbit. Cats…

I’m sure by now you have been told it is a gift for you. That is basically what it is. Among the birds and mice I have been given I once found a 13 striped ground squirrel at the door that was huge and practically intact. Yum!

Of course it is. She has left you a “gift”, it’s a sign of affection. Ask your vet. There may even be times that she brings live ones. That’s when it’s the nastiest!

Of course *someone* has seen it before. When I was a child and didn’t know that it’s irresponsible and cruel to leave your cats outside, I was brought all kinds of wildlife. But now I’m an adult and know better than to subject my animals to the cruelties of the world and to the diseases that wild animals can transmit. Bring your cat inside. it will protect your cat *and* the wildlife.

Lucky you! It means your cat loves you! My cat has never done that for me, the neuts, snakes, birds, bats, rats and mice she hunts and kills, she takes them home to eat them. think of a way to reward your cat. like maybe carry her to her kill, show her the squirrel them pat her then give her some tuna. your cat is very useful, best of all it loves you. you should love it in return

Cat’s natural instinct is to hunt, which she just brought you her prey she killed. At least it wasn’t a rat!! I live out in the country and I came out one morning to find a dead rat on the porch. Another time I flipped on the lite in my bedroom to find a dead crow on the floor. So my cat is constantly trying to feed me with her little gifts. A way to fix it, is to place a bell on her collar, that way her prey will hear it and she can’t be as sneaky.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cats! I guess you’ve gathered that ’she loves you’, by now, lol. I think they also do it because they are very proud of themselves and they also want to ‘keep’ it. She worked very hard to kill that squirrel and she wasn’t about to just leave it behind.

They are really incredible predators and are perfectly designed, People are always amazed that I’m a man and care so much about cats, since they tend to be classified as a woman’s pet. But, I see nothing ‘girly’ about cats. Who else but a man would bring a ‘kill’ home to show it off? If she could, she’s have it stuffed and mount it on your wall. Just like a guy.

Yes…and it was gross, we also had a barn cat that brought back a deer leg (obviously not her kill)! Cats will bring back their prey for you for a few reasons, mainly because they love you and it’s their version of a present but also if they think you are a poor hunter and want to provide for you. Congrats, and give your cat an extra treat for me…squirrels are just rats with cute outfits.

it’s a present for you. two of my three cats leave dead mice that they catch in the bathroom every once in a while, and i still give them treats and such for this. Next time you go fishing or something on that order when you clean it cut and cook a small cat portion for it and it might thank you for the gift.

Yep! You’re cat did it. She is giving it to you as a gift. I have known a lot of cats to do that. I remember one who would catch a bird, eat it and then always leave the heart at the front door for her mummy. And my sister’s cat is always leaving mice and birds all through the house for her. Sometimes on a nightly basis. Yukky I know. But it’s just their way of saying “Thanks!”
