Our Malamute brings home dead animals and/or eats them. Is this a health hazard?

Sheryll M asked:

We live on an acreage. She is eleven months old. She is always on the watch for rodents, feral cats, opposums, moles, racoons, birds and squirrels. She will kill them or if she
finds a carcass she will bring it home and carry it around or
eat it. Oh, and she kills skunks!

Lots of dead animals can carry disease, you should be careful.

Wild animals have parasites, diseases, and can pass these along to your dog…and to you too. You will want to keep your dog from roaming and killing those animals, for their sake too.

What do you think dogs ate for the centuries before dog chow? We lived on acerage and our dogs were always bringing home lots of disgusting things, and they were fine. Just make sure she is up to date with all her shots. I’d be more concerned with rabies than what she’s eating.

Although dogs have different immune system that humans do ,eating dead animals could still be dangerous. The animal could have died from a infection or some type of parasite that could be transferred to the dog.

Yes it is a health hazard. There are many contagious diseases. Rabies, parvo, getting ticks and dog contracting lyme disease..I suggest u get a area fenced or put her on a chain until you have all the shots completely done. Then you can let her hunt for her victims. But pay attention to your local health warnings and be vigilant with vet appointments.

Get her up to date on her shots.

Dogs can eat dead animals that have died from injury or other “natural” causes, because dogs are scavengers.

However, if the animal they are consuming is dead because it was poisoned…then your dog will be consuming poison as well.
