Septic system, also known as holding tanks is a major component of your home plumbing system. It is basically divided in to two major parts- a septic tank and a drain field. Here all the waste sewage is collected and is further broken down by bacteria. They are placed under the ground outside your home.
It pays to take care of your septic tank because if the necessary bacteria in the system are destroyed then it will cause the biological machine to shut down. If that happens then the sludge will build up and get pushed into the drain field, where it will cause the system to clog and then, you have sewage back up problem.
Professional installation and regular maintenance of the septic system can increase its life and will save you from costly repairs and replacements. It will prevent failures like foul-smelling, contamination of well water etc.
If incase, your sewage is backing up or there is some blockage, you can pump out the tank but not the drain field. But it is not advisable to attempt this pumping out frequently as you may have to get an entire new system soon which can be quite expensive.
A new system should last you more than 20 years if you make sure to install it properly and keep up with the appropriate maintenance. It is a good rule of thumb to have your tank inspected by a septic tank professional every three to five years.
You should always know where your system is located, so that you can be careful while its inspection and pumping. If you cant figure out where the location is, you can always hire a professional septic contractor to find it for you with an electronic detector.
Do keep an eye on what is going down your drain. Being a little careful here can prevent your system from clogging. Avoid flushing materials like heavy toilet tissue or paper towels etc.
Therefore, to keep your system working efficiently over the years, get it inspected regularly.
