What is living in my backyard?

I just moved to a new house a few months ago. In the backyard on the side near the fence area is a dirt area with a couple of holes in the ground, about 2-3 inches wide. What could be living in there? A mole, or maybe a snake (hope not!)? I live in South NJ, suburbs.

Could be ground squirrels (also known as chipmunks). How is the grass around the hole–could be voles. They do less damage than moles–with Spring, it is usually pretty obvious if it is moles or voles. If you don’t have pets, I would recommend you go to the hardware store and buy some “poison peanuts” that you drop down the holes. Fill the holes with soil and wait & see.

Most likely a mole, this is really common in the country, they use the dirt to cover their tunnels, but for some strange reason it doesn’t go inside them. so the most likely culprit is moles. Snakes cant over their holes like moles can
