Bedbugs’ Bites: Identification and Treatment

September 2nd, 2009

Have you been itching for the past few days? Are there red bite marks on the itchy part of your body? Are these bite marks flat or raised? Do the bite marks have a pattern, like they form a line and are a bit close to each other? If you answered yes to these questions, chances are youve been bitten by bedbugs!

Bedbugs are also insects. Although not nocturnal, bedbugs eat at night because their hosts are asleep. Hosts of bedbugs can be any warm-blooded animal including humans. Bedbugs eat blood. The name of these insects came from their preferred habitats: the sofa, couch, or bed.

People have different reactions to bedbug bites. For example, in some people the bedbug bites do not appear immediately. While in other people, it usually takes a few days for the bites to be seen. In rare occasions, bedbug bites have caused some allergic reactions like nausea.

If you were bitten by a bedbug, you need not worry because it does not transmit any disease. What people usually complain about bedbug bites is the itchiness. And sometimes people feel a burning sensation. Because of these, you may lose sleep which can make you anxious and irritable. There are different medicines to treat bedbug bites.

At first, you can try using warm water to treat the bedbug bites. The warm water must be hot enough to make you feel uncomfortable. Because if the water is not hot enough, the bedbug bites might look worse.

Taking systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines has been effective in treating the itchiness and burning sensation. But these medicines have no effect on making the bite marks disappear.

If you want to treat both the itching and the bite marks, you must apply topical corticosteroids. These have been effective in treating both. And while you still feel itchy, try not to scratch because this can only cause scars.

After treating the bedbug bites, you can focus on getting rid of the bedbugs.
