Termites Types: Do You Know Your Termites?

November 30th, 2009

The task of this article is to discuss the three types of termites found in the USA in the hopes of helping you to acquire the skills necessary to identify termites types. This information is vital to you if you are interested in protecting your home and yard against unwanted invaders and getting rid of them before they cause damage to your property.

There are three basic types of termites: subterranean, dry wood, and Formosan. All three derive their food supply from cellulose which is found in wood and wood products. All three kinds also live in highly organized and socialized colonies. They also all share a common enemy ” ants.

Termites cause over three billion dollars in damage to houses and businesses every year. Of that amount, some 95% is the work of subterranean termites which live in the soil beneath your house. They travel to the surface for feeding through a complex system of tunnels which can usually be spotted by a competent professional.

Dry wood colonies live above the soil in dead trees, wood in houses and wood furniture. It is estimated that it may take up to two years to notice damage done by a colony after it has taken up residence. Formosan are late comers to the United States and are primarily in the Southern part of the country. They are subterranean pests which threaten homes and forests but are still distinguished from their underground cousins. Unlike the dry wood kind which only inhabits dead or dying trees, these insects from East Asia, which are believed to have been brought to this country by the U.S. Military after WWII, attack healthy trees.

It is a common misconception that termites are winged creatures. Only a certain segment of the colony actually sprout wings and fly ” what is called swarming, and these are usually referred to as alates. The purpose of the swarm is to find mates and set up new colonies.

Bedbugs: Treatment Methods

November 30th, 2009

Bedbug treatment can be done in many different ways. And the most convenient for anyone will be hiring a professional exterminator for the job.

Bedbugs can be treated in many ways. You can do any of the following effective methods: mattress cover, diatomaceous soil, insecticides, extreme heat, and steam cleaning.

One effective method in bedbug treatment is steam cleaning. The only disadvantage with this method is that it cannot be applied to all materials. Certain furnitures are finished with a material that cannot withstand steam cleaning. You have to check first before using this.

Exposing the infested mattress, linens, or furniture under the sun for hours can do the trick. But first, scrub and vacuum each surface.

It is important for you to know that after vacuuming the infested materials, you must dispose of the used vacuum bag properly. This is done by sealing the vacuum bag inside a plastic bag. And before putting back the exposed materials into the house, you must check for the presence of bedbugs again.

Have you tried using bedbug insecticides? These are also effective for bedbug treatment. You can buy these in dust forms or in sprays. Before you use the insecticide, it is best to carefully read the product label as well as the instructions. Also, you must be very careful in handling insecticides.

Another method of bedbug treatment is the use of diatomaceous soil. This contains fossils of single-celled algae which has jagged edges. The edges can kill bedbugs that come into contact with the soil. Leave the soil for a few days in areas that you are sure to have bedbugs passing by. Never worry because the particles in the soil are too small to cause any harm on you. After a few days, vacuum the soil off and dispose of the vacuum bag properly.

If the bedbugs can only be found in the mattress, you can treat it by using a fabric or vinyl mattress cover. You can put the mattress inside and seal all the zippers around it. Once the mattress is sealed inside the cover, bedbugs will be confined inside the mattress. The bedbugs cannot even eat and in 6 months or more, the insects will die of hunger.

Easy Termite Prevention Tips

November 26th, 2009

Termites can infest any home at any time. The best way to achieve termite control is to understand and practice termite prevention. Protecting a home begins with knowing the signs and the conditions that termites prefer so that you can reduce the chances that they find your home a tasty treat. You may already have termite damage and not even realize it.

One type of termite, subterranean termites, lives underground. Unlike drywood termites, they cannot live without access to moisture. They prefer to move directly from the ground into wood. Termite prevention begins by looking for any wood-to-ground contact. If the wood cannot be moved away from the soil, then the soil might have to be moved away from the wood.

Wood that is constantly moist attracts termites the most. They love damp structures. Look everywhere rainfall runoff may occur such as gutters and downspouts. Don’t allow water to pool near the foundation or wooden structures. Termite prevention requires all water to be diverted well away from the home.

Another area of the home to look at for termite prevention is the crawlspace. Not every home has these added spaces, but when they do they can be harbors for trapped moisture. Vents are often routed through these crawlspaces and create a damp environment, ideal for termites and termite damage. Also watch for areas where rainwater may collect.

Many homes feature mulched beds. Anytime mulch is piled against the house, it causes two problems. It provides easy access for termites into the home, and it may also hold moisture against the wood making it even more attractive to termites. Good termite prevention requires all mulch to be pulled away from the house so as to leave a gap between the mulch and the wood.

It’s easy to justify keeping firewood close to a home. After all, in the winter when it’s cold outside, nobody wants to trek out into the elements to gather wood. Yet firewood is often left in the same location throughout the year and this is an attraction for termites. To prevent termites from getting a foothold in the home, make sure firewood is stored away from the structure, preferably far from the home.

Another overlooked aspect of termite prevention is to have an annual inspection. A termite professional knows the difference between termite damage and rotting wood. They can spot potential problems as well as risky areas. The cost of an inspection is inexpensive compared to the cost of potential damage.

Termite prevention starts by understanding that any home or wooden structure is at risk. By understanding these risks, and knowing what attracts termites, any homeowner can greatly reduce their risks. Termite control begins with knowledge, understanding and a healthy dose of termite prevention.

An ounce of termite prevention is worth a pound of termite control. Florida Bug Inspectors has been helping Florida families prevent termite problems for over 25 years. Russ Frank, the owner, is an expert in termite prevention and control. Contact FBI for solutions to your termite problem.

Termites Treatment: Are You Aware of Alternatives?

November 24th, 2009

This article will explore some of the alternatives to termites treatment involving fumigation and insecticides which may not be familiar to many of us. Fumigation and insecticides, although widely used across the USA and many foreign countries, are much maligned in that they pose risks of danger to the health and safety of people and pets. In addition, these techniques of exterminating termites pose environmental concerns.

One such alternative which is said to interrupt the life cycle of termites is boric acid. Although some experts doubt its effectiveness in getting rid of large colonies, this system works by being dissolved in water and then spread over infected areas. Boric acid controls the population of the colony by preventing it from growing and most importantly, from moving on to other locations. This form of treatment is generally considered a preventive measure which contributes to the doubt expressed by some experts in using the product to get rid of an infestation.

Another method which sounds more like Star Wars, is microwaves which shoot rays into the wall or wood killing the pesky invaders in two to three days. This is a rather recent termite treatment method which is considered best when used against small infestations confined to a particular area.

Freezing is also sometimes used. Like microwaves, this process is effective in the early stages of infestations and where the problem is confined to small areas. Liquid nitrogen is pumped or sprayed into the affected areas, often through the tunnels constructed by the termites. Walls and insects are frozen, the former forever and the latter only for a brief time.

For larger colonies which are confined to a small area, electricity can be used. Electro-guns shoot high voltage electricity into the habitat of the colony. And finally, for large colonies in a large space, heat treatment should be considered, and in fact, in some states it is the only lawful alternative to fumigation where a large portion of the house is infected.

Ways to Fight Bedbugs

November 24th, 2009

If you have established that there is a bedbug infestation at your home, fighting bedbugs must start as soon as possible. Infestation can spread easily because bedbugs can be easily transferred from one location or furniture to another. In fact, there are reports of bedbug infestations found in multi-unit buildings, condominiums, or apartments. Bedbugs can be transmitted through clothes, furniture, or pets.

Fighting bedbugs can be done in many ways. You can start with the simplest method which is exposing the infested material under the extreme heat of the sun. Steam cleaning is also effective. Just make sure that the material will not be destroyed by this method.

Another method is by using diatomaceous soil. This soil has jagged edges which can cut through bodies of bedbugs.

Another method in fighting bedbugs is with the use of insecticides. You will find many varieties of bedbug insecticides. Examples of these are residual insecticides, insecticidal dusts, contact insecticides, and insect growth regulators. Bedbug insecticides can be in sprays, powder, or liquid forms.

Simply apply the insecticides in the infested areas especially in cracks and crevices as these are usual hiding places of bedbugs. When using insecticides, make sure that you handle these with care. You can be poisoned by insecticides.

You can even find bedbug insecticides that are less toxic and eco-friendly. Always read the product labels and instructions carefully. Follow the application instructions properly and take note of the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

After every treatment, you must vacuum the infested area and furniture. And after vacuuming, you must dispose of the used vacuum bag properly by sealing it inside a plastic bag. This will ensure that bedbugs will not be transmitted.

In fighting bedbugs, it is also important to control re-infestation. First, make sure that you strictly follow the treatment regimen. Then, wrap your treated mattress in a plastic, fabric, or vinyl mattress cover. This has zippers along the sides which seals in the mattress inside. This way if any bedbug was spared from the treatment, it cannot eat and will eventually die. Reduce clutter and observe cleanliness.
