Are There Bedbugs in your Hotel Room?

by Renee Garcia on November 13, 2009

How did bedbugs get to the United States? According to history, bedbugs came to the United States through the European colonists. Good thing that when DDT was used, bedbugs were eradicated. Unfortunately, DDT has been banned for so long already. And this caused bedbugs to re-appear. Aside from that, international travel has also increased the number of bedbug infestations in the country.

There is a high likelihood of getting a hotel infested with bedbugs. Bedbugs can travel with luggage. And these can be spread by humans, pets, furniture, luggage, and others. Because of the high occupancy rates of hotels, it is theorized that bedbugs easily thrive in those places.

How can you be sure that there are no bedbugs in a hotel?

Crevices and cracks on the walls and floors are usual habitats of bedbugs. If you see any crack or crevice inside your hotel room, you definitely have to check for bedbugs. You can also check the mattress. Look for cracks, red spots, and brown spots. The red spots are caused by blood from crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are caused by the bedbug’s feces.

If you find bedbugs, inform the hotel manager at once and transfer to another hotel. Why not simply transfer in another room in the same hotel? Bedbug transfer can be easily done. Therefore, if one room has bedbugs, there is a high possibility that the other rooms also have bedbugs. There have been reported incidences in the United States of bedbug infestation in multi-unit hotels.

Furthermore, if you are staying in a hotel, always use the suitcase stand. This is usually provided in hotels but rarely do guests make use of it. Do not leave your luggage on the floor.

If you stayed in a hotel and woke up the morning with insect bites that are itchy, you can identify these as bedbug bites if they have a linear pattern. Bedbug bites are pink to red and can either be flat or raised.

Now that you slept in a bedbug-infested hotel, you must not become a carrier of these insects. All your bags and clothes must be vacuumed thoroughly. Wash everything in hot water. You can apply topical corticosteroids on the bedbug bites.

I read somewhere that since 2005 bed bugs have tripled across the United States, thats insane! Bed bugs have become an epidemic and we need to do all that we can, to stop them spreading. My son Ryan recently came back from backpacking around Europe and believe it or not, bed bugs hitched a ride back with him and made themselves right at home in our beds, it was an absolute nightmare. The exterminator came and dealt with the infestation and now whenever anyone in my family travel i encase their luggage with a suitcase liner to protect against bed bugs. So far we haven’t had anymore unwanted visitors. My advise is that when anyone goes camping or on any sort of travel invest in luggage liners so bed bugs can’t hitch a ride back with you. I purchased mine online at http://www.bedbug.com so i can vouch for the fact they are doing the trick, i also purchased pillow, mattress and box spring encasements so i’m covering all my bases!!
