Believe it or not, if you are someone that constantly stays in hotels, there is a very high chance that some of those are infested with bedbugs. This includes expensive hotels and motels, from the 5 star inn to the 1 star, it doesn’t matter to the bed bug.

Sounds weird huh, maybe you don’t believe it, if not just do an internet search about bed bugs in hotels and you will see that this happens all too often. So how can you prepare yourself and make sure that you are not going to bring home some unwanted visitors to your home that are not going to want to leave.

What you can do to check if your room has bed bugs

The most noticeable sign of bed bugs are the marks that they leave when they are done feeding. This is almost a guarantee that you your room is crawling with blood sucking insects, and this is not a good thing and I would not be comfy sleeping with them again.

Take the sheets off of the bed when you first arrive in the hotel room, and check between the cracks and crevices of the mattress. They love to hide there and come out at night. If you see lots of black spots, blood stains, or small white eggs, then there is a good chance your hotel room is infested.

What do I do if I discover the room is infested?

If you find them in your room, the other rooms are probably contaminated also. You could ask for another room but make sure that you due an extra thorough inspection before accepting it. If not then just ask for a refund, I am sure they would not want to be investigated by the health department.

How can I prevent hotel bed bugs from traveling back with me?

One thing about bed bugs is that they are very good at hitchhiking. Especially getting free trips from your hotel room to your home. They will crawl onto just about anything to travel back to your home, including your clothes and luggage.

Washing all of your clothes in hot water before going back home will kill any stowaways that may have got into your clothes. Also spraying your luggage with pest spray may do enough to keep them from trying to sneak into suitcase, although it will rarely kill them as they are immune to lots of stuff.

All you have to do is be aware that there is a good chance your room will have bed bugs. The more you educate yourself about them and how they get into your home the more you improve the chances of not bringing them back into your home.
