Online Business Marketing 101

by Calantha Dubec on March 23, 2010

Finding this article means that you are thinking about advertising your local business online. You are probably wondering if the cost will justify the expense.

For the rest of this article, we will sue the example of a pest control business. How can they, as a small business, generate new customers every single week?

Typical ways of advertising are newspapers, billboard and fliers. These can work but the have one problem in common. You are paying for thousands of people to see you, yet only a hand full have the true potential to be your clients. So why pay to advertise to the rest of them?

Online marketing differs in that you are in front of the people that are looking for you and not the whole world. Let’s face it, if you are looking for a dentist, you don’t want pest control in your face. Smart business owners advertise effectively.

So online advertising means you need a web page, right?

“I already have a web page.” you might say. “Can’t I keep on using it?” The answer is probably not. If your current site isn’t getting you new clients, then it probably isn’t set up right and you’ll need to start all over

You’ll find it less expensive to hire a professional to build you a new fresh site that generates traffic, than to try and re-do your current site.

Benefits to marketing your business are many, but my personal favorite is that it keeps me free to do my job, while a professional takes care of my site.

Don’t forget that customers are different than what they were ten years ago. Ways of advertising have changed to meet the ways the clients themselves have changed. Its called evolution. If you don’t evolve with the rest of the world, you’ll go extinct like the dinosaurs. Online marketing for small, local businesses is the wave of the future. If you’re not in front of your clients online, I promise you they are staring at (and calling) your competition.

To sum this up, advertise your business online as quickly as possible. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll reap the rewards!
