There are 4000 odd species of cockroach in the world. Only three, though, are known to infest our homes & workplaces and cause problems. Some other species of cockroach are similar, but can be found in the home less often than these 3. Every cockroach has its own specific features & all like somewhat different things. However they are all pests and can cause great health hazards and damage to us & our families.
Distinguishing these roaches could be the first step in eradication & control. It is quite easy & can aid in extermination methods. Here are the three major common cockroaches.
American Cockroach
They can grow up to 25mm in length. It has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. These roaches get easily attracted to liquor and can often be seen in bars or at home in case you had a party & didn’t clean up promptly. They have a life span of up to one and half years. Their incubation period is from 6 to 8 weeks.
German Cockroach
These kinds of cockroach sport a brownish or tan color, and two lighter stripes on the back of its head. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably the fastest breeding in comparison to the cockroaches, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. That is relatively fast, seeing one of them can multiply to 30,000 within a year. These can live for around 6 months.
Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest of these 3. It grows around 25mm in length. These critters move generally slower than the other species and are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body. They are often referred to as the “water bug” because they like to live in dark, damp areas. They are most likely found in damp mulch or cellars. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching & they can each live for up to two years.
