The german roach is the most prolific of all roaches and is found throughout the world. Their eating habits and lifestyles allow them to thrive just about anywhere. From the animal fat in bars of soap to cardboard boxes or glue in a book binding german roaches do quite well with things the average person wouldn’t think of. This roach is very adept at nesting in dark out of the way areas and it is spread as a stow away in a box or delivery. It’s ability to adapt to almost any situation and the fact that they can eat just about anything makes for very few places they cannot live.
German roaches have very sensitive antenna which can pick up the smallest air borne particles. This alerts them to food, water, other roaches and even pesticides or other chemicals that may hurt them. Hiding by day you can often see their antenna protruding out from the edge of the crack they are in waving about testing the air. They also have antenna of sorts on their hind end called cerci. This appendage is also sensitive to air currents but is used mainly for protection. The german roach can detect your presence in a room by the air you disturb long before you flick any lights on.
The birth rate of the german roach is rivaled by no other. In six months time they are able to produce over fifteen thousand roaches which is far above any other species. The babies become sexually mature in about thirty days and females only need to mate just once. The life span is only six to nine months but since the female produces egg capsule every thirty to forty days the numbers can become staggering.
Very few homeowners can successfully eliminate a german roach infestation. Without proper training and a knowledge of just how a roach can survive makes this a daunting task. Professional exterminators know the habits and weaknesses of a german roach and have the tools and right products to get the job done. Cleanliness is paramount but is not the only factor in treatment.
It takes time even under the best of circumstances and if new german roaches hitch a ride into the home you may need to start all over from scratch. For these reasons the german roach is one of mans biggest enemies and so difficult to control
