Deciding What Plants to Use in Your Garden Space

August 17th, 2009

There are no hard and fast rules towards developing a perfect garden. However, a little bit of planning and programming can always increase the range of its beauty.

The reason you need to plan is because you cannot just plant any vegetable. You need to analyze the area you are planting in to determine if your crops can thrive there. Thankfully, there are tons of plants out there, so no matter what kind of environment you have, you will have a lot of options.

The first type is greenhouse or sun room plants. These are very popular and include such species as Croton Manny and Croton Petra. These need direct filtered light in order for the color of the plants to fully develop.

Indoor growers will find ferns to be a preferable type of plant. Names of plants in this category include Southern Maidenhair and Spleenwort (I think they sound a bit weird).

Besides these somewhat elaborate crops, there are traditional plants. These include basic fruits and vegetables that can be eaten right off the crop. Most gardeners like to have some of these in their gardens.

There are many benefits to growing a wide range of plants. The aromas from every individual one mix together to form a pleasant smell that greets you whenever you arrive at your garden.

It is important to remember that plants need to be treated as gently as human beings. That calls for a lot of grooming sessions, which includes cleaning leaves, trimming stems, and other maintenance activities necessary to maintain the beauty of your flowers.

If you want to have a lot of plants, you will need the space to back them up. In addition to area, the quality of your soil must be great, so anything that grows in it will be healthy.

Arrow Vinyl Sheds: A Good Solution for Outdoor Storage

August 16th, 2009

Many homeowners across America share a common problem; they are looking for a good place to store their possessions. Nothing has changed, families are still buying things that they need to store, but many of the newer homes don’t have adequate storage space. This lack of storage space forces people to rent one of those inconvenient and expensive storage rooms, making them feel like an employee for a moving company. They are always going back and forth to drop off and pick up items.

However, there is a really simple and inexpensive solution that homeowners should consider. An Arrow vinyl shed may be the solution you are searching for. They are very convenient since they are placed right in your back yard. This makes it simple to retrieve items with ease. They can house children’s toys, old clothes, and gardening equipment. They can be purchased conveniently online and will be delivered promptly to your home. These sheds take about three or four hours to assemble and require no special skills or tools.

Why should you choose an Arrow vinyl storage shed?

Unlike metal or wood storage sheds, vinyl sheds are one hundred percent maintenance-free. They will never need a coat of paint or any treating. They also will not rust, rot, or dent. Not to mention the fact that they are completely fire retardant. These sheds are also extremely durable and will hold up in all kinds of weather conditions. The same cannot be said for models that are made of wood or metal. An arrow vinyl shed also boasts metal reinforced columns, which make it one of the sturdiest storage sheds on the market today.

The average vinyl storage shed is considerably less expensive that the average metal or wood shed. Even though the vinyl storage shed may be considered less attractive or aesthetically pleasing than their wooden competitors, the trade-offs are obvious. Keep in mind that the vinyl sheds are totally maintenance free and stronger than a wooden shed. You will never have to worry about a vinyl shed fading, warping, or swelling under changing weather conditions. For people living in regions that are subject to rapidly changing weather conditions, a vinyl storage shed is hands down the best choice. Remember that you are installing a storage shed to store items, not to decorate your backyard. If you want to spruce up your surroundings, look for an attractive bird bath, some outdoor ornaments, or plant a few exotic trees.

In addition to being more durable that other materials, an Arrow vinyl shed will provide you with all of the same features as other storage sheds. They are available in a variety of sizes. They come with extra wide double doors, so that large equipment like lawn mowers or snow blowers can easily fit inside. And unlike storage sheds that are made of wood or metal, most vinyl storage sheds come with extended warranties. In fact, an Arrow vinyl shed boasts a 15-year limited warranty. What more could you ask for?

Organic Farming vs Agribusiness

August 15th, 2009

People all over the world are extremely concerned about our environment especially as how it relates as to what we put into our bodies and also how it affects our earth. Many are turning to organic, holistic, natural, back to the earth, and homesteading, which are all disciplines of agriculture that are growing in popularity each day.

Large food producers over the years have done an excellent job of providing substantial amounts of nutritious food for a growing world population, but is this scenario of farming sustainable? Organic farmers and conventional farmers are looking for common answers to this question.

Organic farming can be defined as not allowing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, plant growth regulators, and livestock feed additives. Organic farmers rely on tried and true methods such as crop rotation, crop residue recycling, animal manure and mechanical cultivation to maintain the soil and to control weeds, insects and other pests.

Enhancing and maintaining soil health is the mainstay of organic farming. Many methods are employed including crop rotation, green manure, cover cropping, application of compost and mulching, Organic farmers also use certain fertilizers such as seed meal and mineral powders such as rock phosphate and greensand which are naturally occurring forms of potash.

Nitrates which were used during World War II as munitions became an abundant and cheap source of nitrogen. This situation impelled the industrialization of agriculture in the early 20th century. Research produced hybrid seeds, fields grew in size and cropping became specialized to make efficient use of machinery, irrigation, fertilization and the use of pesticides.

As a means to insuring a successful crop, the usage of genetically modified organisms (GMO), human growth hormones (HGH), sewage sludge and antibiotics in the production of our food supply gained a foothold and can now be considered a threat to our health.

Conventional farming allows farmers to precisely apply only the necessary fertilizers to the soil in order to minimize waste pollutants. Organic farmers do not have that option because they have to depend on natural fertilizers such as manure which contains fixed amounts of various elements which can not be adjusted. The most common problem is over application of these organic fertilizers because of their relative lack of potency. These over applications can very easily lead to pollution of the water supply.

Can agribusiness convert to large scale organic farming and still be able to make money without raising the consumer’s cost to unaffordable levels?

The current food distribution system favors high volume production with large farming corporate operations and cannot be easily altered. What we know as organic farming may change very dramatically in the coming years. A growing consumer market is a driving factor in our society and will encouraging conventional farmers to convert to organic agricultural production methods. I believe this trend will continue.

Gardening With A Chipper Shredder

August 15th, 2009

Working on your back yard or garden to clear down any non-essential bushes or trees is very hard work! Not only do you need to chop the trees down, you are also required to then get rid of of it too in an environmentally friendly manner also. This is definitely where having a tree chipper or leaf shredder will be ideal.

These small, portable units will break down smaller sticks and branches and plants into smaller pieces so that they can be reused or recycled in a large number of different ways. For example, a branch from your dead tree could be turned into wood chippings and then used as a layer on your flower beds. If you have a large number of trees or branches to shred, they could be used to create an area where young people can play safely. Softer items such as shrubs could be shredded down by a garden shredder into a fine or coarse mulch and that is then brilliant for putting to your plants and used as a natural fertilizer. Just mix up the reduced plant with a bit of water and leave it to compost in a warm storage device and you will produce a great locally made product to assist your replacement trees and plants grow.

Shredders are available in various shapes and sizes, from smaller plastic portable models designed for home users only, which use rigid nylon string to thresh the waste plants you feed into it into smaller pieces, right the way through to large towable electric chippers and model that are built for industrial shredding for landscaping companies and gardening companies. In the middle ground of this range there are many shredders and chippers which are solely designed to break down the waste material that is placed into them. They are made to take branches of no larger diameter than two inches and they will quite quickly process all types of other garden wastage without any issues at all. Products by Bearcat or Craftsman are built for this sort of work and will last you for years and years.

A leaf shredder is a perfect option for people with larger gardens that have trees that shed their leaves. Place the leaves into a shredder and they will be reduced quickly. The processed leaves are great for making compost or adding to a mulch, and the shredded leaves are easily disposed of.

You could make it a group purchase. Get together with your neighbors and buy the chipper shredder between the group and share it around you all. It makes for a perfect idea to jointly own a chipper shredder as they are not needed all year round.

Create an Inviting Area with Outdoor Patio Lighting

August 14th, 2009

If you want to spend time outside at night, take a look at your patio lighting. Oh, you don’t have any? Well, think about that for a minute. Having outdoor patio lights can let you have fun on cool summer nights after dark by making it safe to stay out at night and enjoy the evening even after the sun has gone down.

And, if you plan on installing your own low voltage patio lights, then you need to consider a few things first. You need to decide if you want low voltage lights or if you want solar lights. Then you need to decide if you want the lights to stay on, or go on and off on a schedule. After deciding, you can feel confident on your purchase.

Low voltage patio lighting is available in a number of styles, and can add ambiance and flair to your patio, deck or garden. Choose lights that will play up your home’s features, and give value to your home, too. They’ll give your home “curb appeal.” They will make your home and yard warm and inviting, and it’ll make it a place you want to go.

If you have stairs or steps that go to your house or patio, you can put lights on the steps, too. In the dark, this can be a gentle guide up stairs. Or, place lights in your garden to add a path through it that shows off your hard work. The lights themselves not only provide safety, but also make your outdoor world inviting to others.

Use your imagination and creativity when updating or adding a patio. Take your time and plan how and where you want the focus to be. Low voltage patio lighting needs to be more than an afterthought. With careful planning, the lights can make an outdoor area warm and inviting.

It doesn’t matter which you choose, solar power patio lights or low voltage patio lights. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. While low voltage lights are easier to install and are brighter, the bulbs burn out faster than LED lights do, and you can damage your wiring. Solar powered lights are usually smaller than low voltage lights, and they last 10 times longer than bulbs do. LED lights don’t burn out suddenly, either. They simply get dimmer as time goes on so that you know you need to replace them. However, the solar panels can be ineffective to some extent if sunlight is scarce.

When do you want the patio lights to come on? These types of transformers come in three kinds. Manual transformers let you turn the lights on and off yourself as you need to, automatic timers come on based upon the time of day or night, and photocell transformers turn the lights off at dawn, on at dusk.

Low voltage patio lights and solar powered lights are both good choices, depending on what you need. This is also true for your transformer. Decide what you want and what you need, and you’ll find that putting in your outdoor lighting will be easy.

Choose A Quality Roofing Material For Your Home

August 14th, 2009

Roofs are the most essential part of any house. Two things that are a must to keep your roofing system in a good condition for several years are: quality roofing material and regular inceptions.

Since roofs face all the changing climatic conditions(like rain, snow heat etc.) to protect us, it is very important to protect them as well so that they can carry out their function well. So, if any kind of repair is required get it done immediately.

Getting a complete roof replacement can be quite expensive. So if you want to avoid these situations, make sure that you get your roof checked up regularly and get the minor repairs done whenever needed. So, if you haven’t had your roof checked for ten years, this is the time for it.

Roofing contractors will perform a relatively inexpensive check up of the whole of your roofing and if you pick a reputable company they will tell you exactly what needs repairing now and what is likely to need repairing in the future.

You will get a large variety of roofing material in the market these days. Be very careful while selecting the roofing material for your home as home is one of the largest investment for any homeowner and no one will want to spend extra money on it repair work. So always go for the top quality roofing material that will be strong enough for any weather condition.

Repairing your roofing may cost less but if you have to repeatedly repair it then it is a much more cost-effective solution to have a new roofing. A contractor will be able to help you assess the best option for your roof.

Frequent roof repairs can be an indication to some major structural problems. One good way to find this out is to get the old roofing shingles completely ripped off and then have the underneath inspected and repaired properly.

Now you can get the new quality roofing installed without any fear. Though this will be a bit more expensive than the repair work, but will surely stay for a longer period.

Outdoor Solar Lights, An Answer For Lighting Problems

August 14th, 2009

Many times you will find an area of your lawn where accent lights would offer a great benefit, but find that there is no power available to that spot. Rather than call the electrician, you should install outdoor solar lights. Even with the most expensive solar lights, you may find a less expensive solution for that problem area.

Solar lighting does not require electrical lines. Installation is relatively simple, just insert the stakes into the ground and all the sun to do the work. As sunlight is absorbed by the photovoltaic cell, the batteries that power the lights are charged. When darkness comes, the lights begin to glow.

Solar lights use power from the sunlight which is stored as electricity in batteries. A photovoltaic cell is required to make this energy to store. The cell is the black window that is located on top of the solar light. These batteries can be used to power traditional incandescent lights, however, many of the newer solar lights have LED lamps that provide more light with less power. Thus the batteries on these LED lights actually last longer.

For the lights to operate correctly there must be adequate sunlight during the day. The batteries need to charge for several hours. Even then lights may not remain on for the entire night, but do remain lit from dusk until midnight. These are not the best choice of emergency lights. They are the easiest of outdoor lights to install. They can offer great accent lighting.

When lighting under a tree, remember the shading may not allow for adequate charging of the batteries. The same is true for the shaded side of your home. In these instances, traditional lawn lighting may be your best choice. Keep solar lighting in mind for those more remote areas of your yard.

The cost of solar lighting can range from very inexpensive to very expensive. Inexpensive solar lights can be bought at local discount stores for as little as four dollars per light. For more decorative sets, you can expect to pay more for the lights.

If you need to light a drive way or a walk, solar lighting is often a very good choice.

Outdoor solar lighting is also a green choice as power does not have to be produced to operate your lighting.

Role Of A Plumbing Engineer

August 13th, 2009

Plumbers are an essential constituent of the skilled engineering society, but a plumber is not qualified as a plumbing engineer. They are different. You require a plumber to link a toilet which is not working , restoring an absorbent pipe or unblocking an obdurate drain.

The simple way to differentiate among plumber and plumbing engineer is that plumbing engineer is someone who proposes the system, while the plumber is the self who looks after the system.

Plumbing engineering depends on plan, outline, conception and execution. A plumbing engineer builds an outline for a new pipe system for a new building or chain of buildings, and then makes sure that each and every pipe connection is rock-solid and the release technique is well-organized.

The plumbing engineer chooses the right materials to make sure the system lasts for years with minimal maintenance. If you get a top-notch plumbing engineer, you probably won’t need to call the plumber very often.

Customarily, the plumbing engineer execute the computations, sizes the tools and set up the plumbing plan and structure credentials under the guidance of a certified mechanical, fire protection or civil, professional engineer.

The plumbing engineer gets comfort with the civil engineer for the plumbing systems exterior to the building which includes storm water, sewer, natural gas, fire suppression water, domestic water, irrigation water and other special type of water and the waste systems. Also the plumbing engineer is engaged in the complete design of the building of a water-based fire suppression system.

As there is a wide range of jobs and region of overlap with other design experts, it is necessary to have the plumbing engineer on the production team as a member as soon as it is possible. These plumbing engineers have an unusual part in the plan of the fire suppression sprinkler systems for a facility. The complete building advance to the plan of the building is very vital when implementing fire protection need into a facility.

The design experts, including the plumbing engineer, will bank on the suggestion of the fire protection engineer. The fire protection engineer will create building risk types synchronizing with the different fire protections requirements for a facility. The plumbing engineer will act together with the fire protection engineer when the fire protection systems have a need of water is necessitated.

Get Your Septic System Inspected Regularly

August 13th, 2009

Septic system, also known as holding tanks is a major component of your home plumbing system. It is basically divided in to two major parts- a septic tank and a drain field. Here all the waste sewage is collected and is further broken down by bacteria. They are placed under the ground outside your home.

It pays to take care of your septic tank because if the necessary bacteria in the system are destroyed then it will cause the biological machine to shut down. If that happens then the sludge will build up and get pushed into the drain field, where it will cause the system to clog and then, you have sewage back up problem.

Professional installation and regular maintenance of the septic system can increase its life and will save you from costly repairs and replacements. It will prevent failures like foul-smelling, contamination of well water etc.

If incase, your sewage is backing up or there is some blockage, you can pump out the tank but not the drain field. But it is not advisable to attempt this pumping out frequently as you may have to get an entire new system soon which can be quite expensive.

A new system should last you more than 20 years if you make sure to install it properly and keep up with the appropriate maintenance. It is a good rule of thumb to have your tank inspected by a septic tank professional every three to five years.

You should always know where your system is located, so that you can be careful while its inspection and pumping. If you cant figure out where the location is, you can always hire a professional septic contractor to find it for you with an electronic detector.

Do keep an eye on what is going down your drain. Being a little careful here can prevent your system from clogging. Avoid flushing materials like heavy toilet tissue or paper towels etc.

Therefore, to keep your system working efficiently over the years, get it inspected regularly.

The Value Of Organizing A Garden Shed

August 13th, 2009

The worst thing about gardening in my opinion is not my weedy garden, or a bed that needs replanting, but rather the fear I have about entering my cluttered dingy garden shed. What makes it worse is the last minute fall pile-in of tools, pots, extra bags of dirt, muddy hoses, etc. If a well ordered garden shed is conducive to efficient weeding, then I have to admit to less than perfect gardening efficiency.

A disorganized shed is simply an impediment to getting outside chores done. We all are prone to procrastination. The thought of dragging various items out of the shed to get access to the long handled clippers almost makes you want to turn the TV on. If you have trouble getting to your outside chores perhaps your messy garden shed is playing a role.

The first step in organizing your shed is to pull everything out. And I mean everything! Garden sheds can often act as depositories for old rusty and broken junk and old paint cans filled with rock hard paint. Once everything has been removed from the shed examine the contents with a critical eye. You will want to discard or give away everything that does not have a specific use. If items have not been used in a year give them away.

Now that you have gotten everything out of the shed, it’s time for a thorough cleaning. Maybe even a fresh coat of paint on the inside will brighten things up and keep the spiders from weaving webs in every eave and corner. You can also use this time that your tools are out to fix up any problems, tighten the wheels on your lawnmower, and oil up any gears and hinges.

Before putting items back into your shed take the time to add shelves and or hooks. Although an assortment of three inch nails hung your father’s gardening tools, times have changed. In my opinion, those nails are an invitation for spiders to create string art in your shed. Go to your local hardware store and purchase some proper hooks. The hooks are inexpensive and sturdy and plastic coated. Proper hooks and shelving are a worthwhile investment.

Now you can put everything back into a better organized shiny clean garden shed. Knowing that everything has a place, and that you’ve gotten rid of the stock pile of broken tools and cracked pots, will make gardening such a easy chore now. Although it might seem like a lot of work to reorganize and fix everything up, it will be well worth it in the end.
