Notwithstanding the incontrovertible fact that trees provide many advantages to any site that they're planted in, there are times when tree removal becomes inevitable. It could be as the tree is blocking your perspective, it is in the way of new foundation to be built, or it is dead and is housing bees or mites. Here are the steps for tree removal with the use of an axe. For this job, you will need a chainsaw, protecting glasses, and comfy footwear.

Appraise the Tree for Chopping down

Assessing the tree is the first step that one should take for DIY tree removal. Establish the direction where the tree will fall. A tree that is leaning will give you no choice but to allow it to fall in the direction where it is leaning. Also, plan a route for retreat once the tree starts to come down. Clear any obstacles in the trail like stones and twigs which might get in the way as you are quickly getting away from the falling tree.

Make the Face Cut

Make the 1st cut on the side of the tree where it'll fall. This is going to be parallel to the ground and a 3rd of the way into the tree. On the same side where the tree will fall, make the second cut downward at an angle of sixty degrees. This should meet with the 1st cut that you made and will permit you to get rid of a wedge. This is the face cut and will lead you through tree removal.

Make the Hinge

The very next step in this tree removal project is to make the hinge. Move to the opposite site of the tree and saw through the trunk 2 inches above the bottom of the face cut. You need to make the cut in a way that it's parallel to the ground, but do not cut throughout the entire width of the trunk. You should leave about an inch of uncut trunk behind the face cut. This is the hinge and will forestall the tree from kicking back and twisting as it falls.

After completing these steps, the tree will generally topple down. Immediately make your retreat. The tree removal is complete as quickly as you have heard the thud.

www.washington.edu The Informed Gardener Blooms Again picks up where The Informed Gardener left off, using scientific literature to debunk a new set of common gardening myths. Once again, Linda Chalker-Scott investigates the science behind each myth, reminding us that urban and suburban landscapes are ecosystems requiring their own particular set of management practices. The Informed Gardener Blooms Again provides answers to questions such as: -Does using drought-tolerant plants reduce water consumption? -Is it more effective to spray fertilizers on the leaves of trees and shrubs than to apply it to the soil? -Will cedar wood chips kill landscape plants? -Should I use ladybugs in my garden as a form of pest control? -Does aerobically brewed compost tea suppress disease? Every year Chalker-Scott receives hundreds of e-mails from around the world on these and related topics. Her advice, based on more than twenty years of experience in the field of plant physiology, has helped home gardeners, landscape architects, and nursery and landscape professionals to develop scientifically based sustainable landscaping practices. Linda Chalker-Scott is an urban horticulturist and associate professor at Puyallup Research and Extension Center, Washington State University. She is the author of The Informed Gardener, winner of the Best Book Prize from the Garden Writers Association. She is the editor and co-author of Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens, the Washington State editor of …

Even though it is corded, it is still easy enough to use. The results are definitely worthwhile. I bought this edger along with the trimmer several weeks ago. See review on trimmer I posted if interested in seeing that review. It was ten dollars cheaper than the lowest retail price I could find locally and I did not have to pay shipping or taxes so it was a great deal all around. The best part is that I love this edger! I have only used my Edge Hog once but it performed flawlessly. Very easy to use and it rolls easily.

My wife and I had always used a hole to edge with. Boy what a difference the edger made. I find I spend 1/2 the time with this edger doing the same work. I actually do more work now in less time since I use it for trenching the flower-bed lines now.

This Black and Decker edger does not seem to show the weaknesses of the Weed Eater. Plus, being electric, it is much quieter and cleaner to operate. It works as advertised. My only regret was not buying one earlier.

It is easy to handle and powerful enough to penetrate the red clay crust in our yard. I had a little trouble getting precision edge-lines since I was used to a single-wheel model that has been discontinued.

You just need to attach the handle, tighten three bolts (no tools required), and I was on my way! This edger is quite powerful.

We have really thick grass with tough roots. Over 10 years it had grown out over our driveway and sidewalk, over 6 inches of overgrowth in some places. Works very well for edging. Only very minor issue is it isn’t balanced to stand upright on its own.

Better than anticipated. It cuts through sod with ease. Get this one it a great product! I live on a corner and have a lot of property to edge. My father used it today for the first time and I have to say I am impressed. I had never owned an edger until I bought this one.

Overall, it gets the job done, but I did notice two design flaws: 1. INDOOR ELECTRIC GRILL.
