Is Termite Damage Obvious?

September 3rd, 2010

If you own residential or commercial property in a warm to hot country, them I am certain that you have heard of the risk of termite damage. However, do you know which signs of termite damage to look out for? Do you know how quickly you can go from not having a problem to having a large infestation? And do you know how long it will take a major infestation of some termites, notably the Formosan termites, to make your property dangerous?

If you do not know the answer to these questions, then you have two choices, either to learn quickly or hire in an expert. In regions of termite activity, it is suggested that every property is screened at least once a year. There are about fifty species of termites in the USA, so it is not an easy job to identify which species you have.

Having said that, subterranean termites are the worst and the Formosan subterranean termites are the most awful of that bad bunch. They can live in colonies of between several hundred and several million and if a million Formosans decide to dine on your house, then you will have to react very quickly indeed.

Of course, you do not want to lose your own house to a termite infestation, but neither do your neighbours, so you have a moral obligation to destroy any termite colonies on your property. So, why should you suspect that you have a termite issue?

As termites eat wood, amongst other things, the best thing to do is search for wood damage around your house. The basement is a good place to begin. Do not be concerned about what type of timber, check it all, since there are termites that like dry wood, termites that like damp wood and termites that will eat anything.

If you suspect that a piece of timber has or is being eaten, use a screwdriver gently to try to break it open. if you see white insects that resemble ants, you have termites. Sometimes, flying termites swarm too., but so do ants.

Termites are white because they rarely see the sun, they do not like light, so they build so-called galleries to walk through. These galleries can be through a length of timber or they might use chewed wood to build galleries leading to where they want to go. For, example pencil-like galleries may hang off the underside of your floorboards to the ground or be attached to concrete walls.

These tube-like galleries can be abandoned or active. Snap a few and see. If they are brittle they have been abandoned, but that does not mean that the termites have departed.

Sometimes, the tubes are made of soil and this is a very bad sign, because it means you have subterranean termites, probably under your house. If you knock these galleries off the walls, they will leave marks called etchings, which will be a sign of termite activity until the house is knocked down, for anyone who recognizes them.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is at present concerned with Termidor termite treatment – a termite killer. If you are interested in this or if you are wondering: What Does A Termite Look Like?. Please go to our web site now for further details.

How To Get Raccoons Off Your Property

September 1st, 2010

Raccoons are mammals and mostly reside in forests. But because they are highly adaptive they can survive in areas other than forests such as marshes, along coasts, and even in cities and urban areas. Due to this reason they are classified as a nuisance and are part of the notorious pest control list.

Raccoons making the attic and chimney of a house their shelter, overturning garbage cans, taking pet food from kitchens and fruits from trees, making a ruckus with household animals (e.g. dogs, cats), and the prospect of transmitting rabies are some of the usual complaints that home owners make against this mammal. That is why individuals who are plagued with raccoons take the necessary steps to get rid of them without touching the nerves of animal welfare advocates.

Some of the ways you can minimize the damage done by this animal are listed below. When a home owner discovers a raccoon nest in his home, most likely in attics or chimneys, he has to see to it that the animal is not comfortable in these areas. Avoid direct confrontation with the mother raccoon because they tend to be over protective of their young and thus potentially dangerous. You have to illuminate the place with very bright lights, provide a source of loud sounds (e.g. a waterproof radio) or place clothes shocked in ammonia, the smells discourages them. If the above doesnt work then it will be time to seek the help of a professional pest control agents.

When you through away leftover foods you have to make sure that they are packed in a double plastic bag. Never forget to partially cover the bags with bleach or cleanser before putting them in the garbage cans. You have to keep the area around the house clean of fallen fruit or waste papers or any short of garbage. Always check your surroundings in order to make sure that there will be nothing to attract raccoons to your house.

Always keep your garbage bins lids closed tightly by pinning them down with a heavy object. If you can buy metal garbage cans with easily attachable lids. Always dispose any trash and waste as quickly as you can in order to prevent the raccoons from smelling them.

If you are going to leave your house for a long vacation, or even for a short walk, always put the garbage bins inside the house or possibly in the garage to keep the raccoons from foraging the contents of the cans.

Build a strong fence around the house especially the garden or yard. This will give the raccoons a hard time to reach your waste bins and may discourage them totally to go inside the property.

If you have a issue with raccoons then you should contact a Toronto pest control expert that has experience with animal control and specifically raccoon removal Toronto

Bug Extermination By Yourself

August 16th, 2010

Since pest control can get expensive, you should ask yourself whether you can possibly handle this issue on your own and therefore save a bit of money. What you need to ask is “Can I get rid of these bugs on my own or should I hire an exterminator?”

Remember time is money, so what is your time worth? When you opt to do the job yourself, you are opting to take a lot longer to do the job. You can typically expect to take up to a hundred times the time that a professional would take on the same job.

Fumigating and protecting your house would take an expert pest control person about 2 hours. Of course, he’s done the same job hundreds of times and faces dozens of obstacles. He knows what chemicals go where and can probably mix them in his sleep.

On the other hand, you’ll need to do extensive research to make sure that you don’t exterminate your family along with the bugs you kill.

Don’t forget that your home invaders are having babies in your home at an alarming rate, making your job more difficult.

After researching you poison of choice, you’ll then need to research weapons of choice. You need a way to deliver the poison effectively.

Your carefully researched poisons are only about 1/4 as potent as what the exterminator can buy. So that means you’ll be spraying four times as much as an expert would need to. Your time investment just quadrupled.

At this point, you’ll most likely have spent about fifty hours in learning about your bugs, pesticides and tools. To this you can add the time you’ll spend poising your bugs…times four.

Do you have that kind of spare time?

Since you don’t have the practical knowledge or expertise that an exterminator does, it is probable that your extermination efforts will flop and you’ll end up calling in the pros any way.

Logically, of course you CAN exterminate the bugs on your own, but is it in your bests interests to do so?

Maybe you could change the oil in your car. But do you really feel like getting the right tools, getting dirty and disposing of the oil on your own? Isn’t it easier just to pay someone a few bucks to do it for you?

Getting rid of pests is better left to those that know what they are doing and you should stick to doing what you enjoy in your spare time.

Africanized Bee Attack A Wake-up Call Or Tampa Bay Area

August 16th, 2010

Africanized bees were the culprit in the latest bee attack. Four men were removing a rotten tree in Safety Harbor recently when they were attacked by bees. As a result three men were hospitalized and one suffered hundreds of stings. Thankfully everyone survived

Experts say that the bee population of the Tampa Bay area is now largely made up of African bees. In fact, these bees are reported to be present in every county south of Ocala. They common enough that firefighters are now trained to deal with African bees.

In Tampa a man was mowing his lawn when bees attacked. Paramedics were first on the scene and used heavy firefighting codes and fireproof hoods to rescue the man from killer bees. They fought with the bees for several minutes but eventually reached the safety of their vehicle. The man was stung more than 100 times.

These hybrid bees spread faster than European bees. While domestic bee colonies may split twice a year, Killer bee colonies may split up to 10 times a year. In the end the killer bees out-compete domestic bees and before long, take over their territory.

These bees are more easily disturbed than common bees. They hate loud noises and vibrations. They are more aggressive and attack in higher numbers than common bees. And they pursue any threat much farther. In some cases they will pursue any threat up to a quarter-mile.

The first thing to remember when you are attacked by bees is to run and run and run some more. Do not stop running until you can find a building or a vehicle for shelter. Do not bother jumping into water because it will not help. The bees will just hang around and wait for you to surface.

The recent attack is a sobering reminder that the entire Tampa Bay area is now home to these hybrid bees. Safe coexistence with these bees will require a bit more awareness and a little more knowledge. Be aware of bees going in or out of any small space. Be prepared to run at the first sign of danger. Above all never try to deal with a nest of bees by yourself. For safety’s sake call a professional bee removal or pest control service.

Florida Bug Inspectors, a leading Tampa exterminator, has over 2 decades of experience finding solutions for challenging insect control problems including bee removal. If you are experiencing bug problems, call Florida Bug Inspectors.
