It is up to you to choose which method to employ, but the natural and organic formulas for pest control are more advocated than using pesticides due to the consequences of the harmful chemicals it can bring upon you and your family’s health. Therefore to make sure your health will never be at stake, begin practicing some deterrent steps.

Become familiar with what repel these home pests and learn how to utilise it.

Ants have been labeled as one of the most pesky insects for a reason. It is because they come in immense colonies and they are everywhere. How to tackle them? Primarily, find out if you can locate where they enter in your home. The moment you know the exact place, it is time to ward them off with citrus oil, coffee grounds, or cayenne pepper scattered over the area as ants cannot go through these stuff. Garlic cloves, cucumber peels and spearmint leaves have been known as products that drive away ants out of your home.

Now it is time to concentrate outdoors, wall the ant hill with some cornmeal especially in the entrance. These will be taken in and shared by the whole colony. Little do they know that by munching it up, indigestion would kill them within a week.

The repulsiveness of cockroaches straying around your home is enough to make you work out your plan to get them out of your sight quickly. You might not know it yet, but there are natural pest control ideas fitted to them as well! To avoid them, put catnip in the places cockroaches might often dwell. If they are already inside your place, put a container these cockroaches would easily find with a piece of bread drenched in beer.

Normally, a mosquito dwells in stagnant water. So the first step is to rid your yard with all standing water – the

home ground of mosquitoes. If you are staying outdoors, put on a solution mixed with at least thirty percent eucalyptus. This works like any mosquito repellant you find in stores. Growing plants such as rosemary, marigold and sage in the yard will keep the mosquitoes away due to its natural deterrent quality.

Several Types Of Rats

February 4th, 2010

Rats are rodents that belong to the Rattus genus of the family Muridae. These are the most dominant species on earth. Plenty of rat species exist in the planet. Most rodents are herbivorous, but some are omnivorous. In general, there are 2 basic types of rats, specifically roof rats (black) and Norway rats (brown). Both are believed to have originated in Asia and are now widely spread all over the globe.

Ship Rats

The black rats are sometimes called roof rats & ship rats, scientifically named Rattus Rattus. They are normally black, have a slender built, 16-21 cm long & weigh about 80-300 gram. Their tail is longer than the head and body and their nose and muzzle are pointed. As the name suggest, roof rats are climbers. Their paws are built to climb and make nests in upper parts of dwellings, rafters, attics and crossbeams of buildings.

Barn Rat

The Norway rat is sometimes known as the house rat, brown rat, gray rat, barn rat or wharf rat. It is one of the best-known and is the larger of the two. Their scientific name is Rattus norvegicus. Their other name refers to their grayish-brown body, with a lighter colored stomach. A brown rat in full size is 18 to 26 cm long and weighs between 400 and 600 gm. Their nose & muzzle are blunt, and they have a tail shorter than its body. They prefer moist conditions & nest in deep burrows.

At around three to four months of age, these rats start to breed. They breed up to 13 times a year and produce 1 to 22 in each litter. Brown rats and black rats eat about the same things. Their diet mainly consists of grains, veggies, fruits, cereals, meats, seeds, nuts and invertebrates. They eat about one-third of their weight in food everyday.

They damage structures, contaminate food & carry deadly diseases. Some of the diseases potentially deadly to man that spread through rats are Weil’s disease, plague, salmonella food poisoning & toxoplasmosis.

How To Successfully Deal With Rats

February 4th, 2010

Rats are a common nuisance in several houses around the world. Some of the methods of dealing with the rat problem in your house are mentioned here.

You can use electronic measures of pest control to rid your house of rats. These methods use ultrasonic rat repellent devices that let out sounds of very high frequencies to repel rats. These sounds are audible only to rats and therefore the devices are safe for people and household pets.

Organic rat repellents are also good solutions for successful elimination of rats. This technique makes use of small tablets or tiny pellets that emit smells of rat predators and thus scare the rats away. They can be spread evenly across the residence, in the garage, backyard and all other places that are frequented by rats.

You can also use moth balls that emit very strong repelling smell and can keep the rats off your house. They are best placed in moist and dark nooks of the house, where rats are generally found.

One of the methods that have been in practice for a long time now is the use of mechanical traps, commonly called wooden snap traps. They are less costly and quite effective when fitted with suitable baits. They must be kept away from children and household pets as they can result in injuries. One problem with these traps is that they can trap not more than one rat at a time. Still, it is a better choice as it is not hazardous like the chemical products that are usually toxic and thus harmful.

Rats can also be trapped and eliminated by making use of a glue board. They can be made of cardboard or wood with their surface covered with glue. The board can then be placed at specific places after placing bits of food as bait for the rats. When rats access the food, the glue sticks to them and they can’t get off the board. This finally results in their death by starvation.

Three Kinds Of Roaches At Home

February 4th, 2010

There are 4000 odd species of cockroach in the world. Only three, however, are known to invade our homes & workplaces and cause problems. Some other species of cockroach are similar, but can be seen in the home less often than these 3. Each cockroach has its own particular characteristics and all like slightly varied things. Still, they are all pests that can cause great health hazards and damage to us & the people we love.

Distinguishing these roaches could be the first step in iradication & control. It is pretty easy & can aid in extermination methods. Here are the three major kinds of cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach has a reddish brown color & single stripe on the head. It can grow up to 25mm in length. These creatures love the taste of liquor. Hence, they are frequently seen in drinking establishments or at home after party where wine, beer and alcohol was present. They can live for around one & half years, and have an incubation period of 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

These kinds of cockroach has 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head, and boast of a tan or brownish color. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably breeds the fastest among its cousins, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 in just a year. They can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

Among these 3, the Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest. It grows approximately 25mm in length. They are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body and move more slowly than the other species. They are often known as the waterbug ’cause they like to live in damp, dark areas. They are potentially found in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching and they can each live for up to two years.

Ant Species

February 4th, 2010

Ants can be seen all over the globe, in any nation, at any climate condition. We can find them in our houses, in our lawns, and even in our workplaces. They live in colonies, and a single colony may have over a million ants. There are several different types of ants. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, bulldog ants, driver ants, fire ants, honeypot ants, leaf cutter ants, silver ants, and weaver ants. All ant colonies are comprised of three classes of ants, specifically the worker ants, the soldier ants, & the single queen ant.

Ants are one of the most common creatures in the world and are of different types. Regardless of their tiny appearance, they could pose a threat to humans as well as animals.

Ant behavior may be different according to their class. Ants’ color may vary from red to brown or black and their size range from 2 to 25mm.

Driver ants and army ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants can be seen in South America and driver ants are seen in Africa. Unlike other species, these don’t have permanent nests. These colonies reproduce by two methods – nuptial flights or fission.

Ants that build their nests in trees by putting leaves together are known as weaver ants. These creatures first force the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.

Honeypot ants generally have enlarged abdomens. These ants are typically found in hot, dry places such as deserts in Australia, Africa and North America. Some places considered these ants as a great delicacy.

Leaf cutter ants feed only on fungus & live only within their colony. They come in different sized castes to perform various duties that are to be done in the colony.

Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.

Lastly, one of the biggest & most primitive varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. They have only 1 chromosome.

Pest Control – Do It Today So You Don’t Regret Tomorrow

January 30th, 2010

Although it is such a tiny creature, a termite causes expensive damage to property annually. Because the termite mainly dines on wood, wooden buildings, such old houses are prone to infestation. Aside from wood, paper (books are made out of paper), soft parts of building materials (the filtration system of a swimming pool), and the insulating components in homes and other structures are also integrated in a termite’s diet. Furthermore, termites will also eat plants, spoiling them.

In order to avoid making an unenlightened investment in purchasing or selling one’s home, the issue of termite infestation should be earnestly considered.

Once termite is noticed inside, it is an almost certain indicator that there is an infestation that would require pest control intervention. Termites are oft confused with ants, which also swarm indoors about the same time that the termite is active above-ground. One way to differentiate a termite from an ant is a close scrutiny of their physical attributes. A termite’s antennae are straight, while those of the ant are bent. Ants have slender waists and 2 pairs of wings, while the termite has a full waistline and a single pair of wings.

The existence of slim, tubelike earthen columns sticking to walls, posts, or floor joists are proof that termites have infested within the house.

Termite control in the home is a job that one cannot carry through with DIY products. Professional services are needed. These professionals bring in the big guns in pest management: the chemicals and the equipment. Let the fee for professional extermination services be thought of as a valuable investment to keeping the house standing.

How To Eliminate Cockroaches From Your House

January 27th, 2010

Cockroaches are small but nasty creatures that thrive in almost all regions and climes. They mostly thrive in dark and wet areas of a house and feed upon any type of organic matter. They are bearers of germs of many diseases and damage food and other items in the house. Thus, it is important to deal with the cockroach problem in an effective and permanent way.

A lot of people opt for insecticidal chemicals and sprays that ultimately turn out to be quite dangerous for the human beings living in the apartment as well. Thus, it is advisable to make use of natural means for driving the cockroaches out of the residence instead of using harmful chemicals.

You can begin with bringing about simple changes in the kitchen like keeping the sink and the area underneath it clean and seeing that unwashed utensils are not kept in the sink for a long time. As cockroaches prefer dark and humid places, the area in and around the sink offers them the best suited environment to multiply. You must try keeping all your food stuff covered so as to stop attracting the cockroaches to nibble on your food.

It is also important to fill all the openings and holes, especially the ones around your drainage and water pipes that provide the best points of entry to the cockroaches. You must also ensure that the areas close to sewers are thoroughly dry and clean so that they do not become the habitat for cockroaches. If your home is near a garbage dumping area or an exposed drainage, you need to take steps to find a way for distancing from them, as these could be the chief reasons for repeated cockroach infestation in your house.

Finally, if you are unable to drive away the cockroaches by natural methods, you should opt for chemicals such as boric acid that are milder and less harmful for human beings than other stronger sprays and pesticides.

How to Pick a Pest Control Company

January 25th, 2010

Be sure to ask for estimates. Many questions about indoor pest control companies will be answered when you meet them in person. Were they professional in their personal appearance and manner? Did they arrive on time? If not did they let you know ahead of time? What about their vehicle? Was it professional, well marked, and clean? Did they pressure you with sales tactics or were they simply helpful and informative?

“How long has your company been in business?” is a good question to ask. The more experience a home pest control service has, the better. “How much training and experience will my technician have?” is another valid question. States typically mandate a certain amount of annual training for all licensed technicians.

You will want to ask the company whether they are licensed. You’ll want to check with the state to verify their claim. Do not do business with a company that can’t or won’t provide proof of licensing.

“Are you insured?” Ask for a certificate of insurance, then verify it with the insurance company. Lack of business insurance is a serious matter. Do not do business with any home pest control company that cannot or will not verify their insurance.

Always ask what methods of home pest control the service uses. This is an important question. Professionals will respond by explaining the importance of eliminating any potential sources of food and shelter for the pests. Treatment options should include techniques for preventing the pests from entering the home.

“What will happen if I get an infestation?” Their first response will be to come in and control the infestation. However, what happens next is even more important? How can they prevent a re-infestation? An appropriate response will include an explanation on how they can break the life cycle of the pest.

The only way to evaluate customer service is to ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. Any recommendations will help you gage the effectiveness of the company’s pest control techniques and methods.

Do they belong to professional associations? Professional pest control associations offer many benefits to their members such as educational opportunities. Be wary of home pest control companies that don’t belong to at least one professional association.

Compare the prices and services of at least 3 residential pest control services before reaching a decision. Price is an important factor but professional knowledge and customer service may be even more important.

Florida Bug Inspectors is a family owned pest control firm in Tampa. They’ve been pest control experts for more than 20 years. If you need help with insect extermination in Tampa call FBI.
