Simple Tips For Termite Protection – What To Do To Keep Termites Away From Your Home

February 19th, 2010

Many times termite problems are caused by poor decisions. There are things that are done that actually can invite termites into your home to cause the damage that they do. Avoid doing these things and you can help prevent potential termite problems.

One of the many mistakes made with termites is removing the stump or tree that the termites are currently infecting. It seems logical enough that removing the tree would get rid of the termites. What happens in reality is that the termites will find their food source gone and move to the next location which very likely is your home or deck. It’s best to kill them first before removing the stump or tree.

A common mistake is stacking wood next to the home. In wintry months it’s nice to have wood easy accessible outside the back or side door. This wood against the house is an easy food source for termites. As they feast on the wood pile, then will eventually move to your home.

Don’t let any wood structures like your deck or stairs leading up to the house touch the ground. Your home is on a foundation so it avoids this problem. Many times people put the wooden deck, sheds, or stairs on the ground making it an easy target for termites. Once they get into your deck they will ruin it and have easy access to damaging your home. Using a sand barrier or even concrete will help protect your wooden structures.

If you think you have a termite problem, you need to take action right now. The better option is to get a real termite inspection from a good pest control company. You will find out if you really have a problem or not. Another option is to use termite stakes. These can be placed around the yard. If termites come in contact with these stakes they will pop up letting you know that there is a termite problem in your yard.

If you want extra termite protection consider using spectracide termite stakes. For mice problems use the Victor Electronic Mouse Trap.

What Common Characteristics Do Brown And Black Rats Have?

February 14th, 2010

Academically speaking, rats are merely mammals commonly called rodents that belong to the subspecies Muridae and the genus Rattus. In the animal world, the rat is recognized as the most prevalent representative of the rodent genus. It is widely considered that the two most well known rat species, the Norway (or brown) rats and the black rats, trace their origins back to the Asian continent. These two types of rats have now proliferated in nearly all parts of the planet.

Black Rats

Roof rats (known as Rattus Rattus) are also called black rats & ship rats. They are normally black, have a slender built, 16-21 cm long and weigh about 80-300 gram. Their tail is longer than the head & body and their nose & muzzle are pointed. They are called roof rats because they are climbers. Their paws enable them to climb and build nests in upper parts of homes, attics, rafters & crossbeams of buildings.

Brown Rat

The Norway rat is sometimes known as the house rat, brown rat, gray rat, barn rat or wharf rat. It is the larger of the two mentioned here, and one of the best-known species. Rattus norvegicus is their scientific name. Their other name refers to their grayish-brown body, with a lighter colored stomach. They prefer moist conditions and nest in deep burrows.

These rats breed when they are 3 – 4 months of age. They breed 1 to 13 times a year & produce 1 to 22 in each litter. Brown rats & black rats eat about the same things. Their diet usually includes seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits, cereals, meats & invertebrates. They eat about one-third of their weight in food every 24 hours.

Some Common Types Of Ants

February 14th, 2010

Ants are acknowledged to be very adaptable creatures adept in living in the harshest habitats all over the world. An ant colony, which can have a population of more than a million , has three classes of “citizens”: the workers, the soldiers, and the solitary queen. In their natural habitat, ants are valuable indicators of shifts in the environmental conditions. Unfortunately, the ants are viewed as pests once they encroach upon human habitations.

Ants are 1 of the most common creatures in the world and are of different types. Regardless of their small appearance, they could pose a threat to animals as well as humans.

Ant behavior may be different depending on their class. The size of ants range from two to 25 millimeters and their color may vary from red to brown or black.

Army ants and driver ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants can be found in South America & driver ants are seen in Africa. Unlike other ants, these do not have permanent nests. Their colonies reproduce via two ways – fission or nuptial flights.

Weaver ants, on the other hand, are those that create their nests in trees by putting leaves together. These creatures first pull the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.

Ants with generally have enlarged abdomens are called honeypot ants. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. Some places considered these ants as a great delicacy.

Leaf cutter ants live only within their colony & feed exclusively on fungus. These ants come in various sized classes to perform various functions that are to be done in the colony.

Another unique type of ant is the fire ant. These ants have a sac of poison that is filled with piperidine alkaloids.

Finally, one of the biggest and most primitive varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. Being of a primeval variety, they have only 1 chromosome.
